Guide Project Management Fundamentals: A Practical Overview of the PMBOK
As with software engineering, there is a great deal of overlap. Depending on the environment and organization, the two disciplines can be disjoint, partially intersecting, or one can be seen as a subset of the other.

While there is no standard relationship, the project manager and the systems engineer encompass the technical and managerial leadership of a project between them, which requires the enterprise of each project manager and system engineer to work out the particular details for their own context. These sources describe the importance of understanding the scope of the work at hand, how to plan for critical activities, how to manage efforts while reducing risk, and how to successfully deliver value to a customer. The systems engineer working on a project will plan, monitor, confront risk, and deliver the technical aspects of the project, while the project manager is concerned with the same kinds of activities for the overall project.
Relationships between Systems Engineering and Project Management
Because of these shared concerns, at times there may be confusion and tension between the roles of the project manager and the systems engineer on a given project. As shown in Figure 2, on some projects, there is no overlap in responsibility. On other projects, there may be shared responsibilities for planning and managing activities. In some cases, particularly for smaller projects, the project manager may also be the lead technical member of the team performing both roles of project manager and systems engineer. Regardless of how the roles are divided up on a given project, the best way to reduce confusion is to explicitly describe the roles and responsibilities of the project manager and the systems engineer, as well as other key team members.
The PMP is the master planning document for the project. It describes all activities, including technical activities, to be integrated and controlled during the life of the program.
The SEMP is the master planning document for the systems engineering technical elements. Fundamental project management knowledge and skills are required to successfully manage all types of projects. The practical application of standard project management methodology will be enhanced with a workshop style approach, the use of participant case studies for practical exercises, and a project simulation.
The course will provide the student with the ability to apply project management best practices in initiating, planning, executing, and closing a project. During the workshop sessions, participants will develop a project charter, perform a stakeholder analysis and use it in developing a communication plan, develop a work breakdown structure, and conduct a risk analysis, as well as create a risk register. Additionally, participants will learn effective techniques for monitoring and controlling a project, as well as how to capture project lessons learned.
Beginner project management books
Participants will be introduced to project management terminology and the importance of project management of organizations to realize the business benefits for their projects. After selecting the class case studies based on actual participant projects, participants will develop their project governance structure. Based on the class case study, participants will identify and analyze project stakeholders, as well as develop a communication plan for each. Afterwards, the attendees will develop a WBS for their case study prior to identifying task dependencies and level of effort estimates for their project schedules.
Attendees will participate in a quality project competition and continue with the class case studies from the previous two days.

Participant teams will compete in a project simulation game where the concepts from the previous three days will be put into action. Project planning, risk analysis, resource procurement and management, and the ability to re-plan based on project progress will be the keys to success. Bonuses will not only be awarded for the team that delivers their project first, but also for how well they did according to their planned budget and schedule they submitted. The course will wrap up with several hands-on EVA exercises, a simple methodology on how to conduct lessons learned will be practiced, and a brief session to organizational change management will be presented.
